On Nov 3, I took B to Fall Space Day at the place where I work. It is a outreach program to teach elementary school kids more about science and engineering - mainly space exploration! He got to pal around with a few other boys who are sons of a friend of mine. They had a blast! An astronaut speaker gave a presentation at the beginning and then they were separated into groups to do the activities. The first one was the "egg drop". Each team had to create a safe capsule for their egg to land in when dropped out of a third story window. They had bubble wrap, tape, string, plastic bags for parachutes...and their egg survived!
Next, was the rocket launch. Each child made a rocket out of paper and a 35mm film canister. The canister was filled with dry ice and water and when the pressure of the carbon dioxide was too much for the canister, it launched. That was pretty exciting!
And last, they made balsa wood airplanes with a rubber band propeller. Once the rubber band was wound and let go, the plane would fly. Sort of. Anyway, it was a great experience and he made some new friends too!
